When selecting an antivirus program it is essential to know the amount of your computer’s resources this software will use. The best programs are those that have little impact on your system’s performance while still providing excellent security against viruses and malware.
The most reputable antivirus companies have extensive test software that is widely published in PDF format for download. The reports provide a quick overview of the protection, performance, and usability of each suite. They also provide detailed graphs and charts that illustrate the results of specific tests. Key figures to look out for include the percentage of real-world and reference set malware vulnerabilities that are neutralised, blocked or weakened by the program, as well as the percentage of false positive detections of benign software.
Avast Free Antivirus had the highest scores for Windows virus detection in tests conducted by AVComparatives in June 2023. It also had the highest percentage of success in removing Mac malware. It also scored highly in the full-scan, passive and quick-scan categories.
Bitdefender Total Security was the least intrusive paid program, followed by Kaspersky Total Security, and ESET Security Cloud Free. It was the slowest in both full-scans as well a quick-scan. The program’s relatively light background impact could be due to the fact that the program doesn’t run by default on Windows 10 and 11, like its competitors do.
Intego was the one with the lowest system impact for background scans and full scans but it still managed to catch every bit of malware. It’s a rare company that only focuses on Macs and makes it a valuable addition to any security arsenal.
